This is not the initial occurrence of a reported incident of this nature. Comparable observations have generated concern in various regions of Amethi and Uttar Pradesh. Police and district officials assert that there is currently no verified instance of drones being employed for theft. Many reported sightings may stem from misinterpretations of airplane lights or misinformation circulating on social media.

The inquiry persists: is “dronechor” an actual phenomenon, or merely a construct born from escalating anxiety and misinformation? Authorities urge people to stay alert, but also avoid panic and report facts, not rumors.

  1. There are rumors that thieves are using drones.

Many villages in Western Uttar Pradesh, including some near Amethi, have expressed concern that thieves and burglars are using drones to inspect homes and other vulnerable areas before stealing.

2. Officials indicate that a significant number of reported sightings are inaccurate.

The district administration and police in Amethi have formally refuted claims regarding the confirmed use of drones for theft. It is suggested that numerous reports of “sightings” may stem from misinterpretations of airplane lights or various other objects.
✦ As an illustration: The District Magistrate indicated that there is a misunderstanding among people, who are mistaking airplane lights for drones.
✦ The SP has verified that the investigations conducted to date have not supported the allegations of drone thefts.

3. False information and legal considerations

The current state of panic has led to the proliferation of rumors, particularly through platforms like WhatsApp and social media. The authorities have issued a warning regarding the dissemination of false information, indicating that individuals may encounter legal repercussions for such actions.
Furthermore, efforts are underway to create a registry of authorized drone owners and operators in Amethi for the purpose of monitoring drone activity.

4. Vigilante actions and apprehension within the community

The emergence of these rumours has led to a notable increase in vigilance among villagers across various locations. Many are opting to remain awake during the night, forming organized patrols, and utilizing torches, driven by concerns that thieves may employ drones to survey properties and identify potential entry points.
One instance was recorded involving a youth in Amethi who was beaten and restrained, with accusations of involvement in theft related to drones.
